If you're hardware is not set-up correctly it can lead to a slow
connection, or it can cause the connection to continually drop out (this
is where you loose your connection to the internet). If your connection
drops out more than once per day, this could be the reason (it is common
for the connection to drop out every now and then, but it would
normally reconnect within a minute or two).
Check that you have an RJ11 cable
plugged into your router/modem at one end, and then in your broadband
filter at the other. For the best speed your filter must be plugged
directly into the BT wall mounted socket (each house only has one of these
unless there has been a second line installed, it should have the BT
logo on it). If you are using a splitter this should be plugged into the
filter (and not the other way round). There should be nothing between
the filter and the BT socket, especially an extension cable as they are
not designed to carry a broadband signal.
Ensure that all equipment that is
attached to your telephone lines, is connected via a filter. Equipment such as a phone, fax, answering machine, cordless phone base
units, alarms, surge protectors, sky box, dialer boxes (the ones that
divert your calls to reduce your phone bill), or anything else you
choose to plug into the telephone system can cause problems if they are
not plugged into a filter. If you are having broadband
issues and think it may be caused by a piece of equipment, simple unplug
it from the system and test your broadband again.
